SPX is pleased to announce that comic book making workshops, featuring hands-on instruction from some of the most talented makers of independent comics. The workshops will occur all day Saturday September 17 and Sunday September 18 at SPX 2016.
Educator Frank Santoro and his Comics Workbook school will host Jeffrey Brown, Carol Tyler, Charles Burns and other masters of the form while they discuss their comic book making process and share their knowledge. Participants will have the opportunity to hone their storytelling and drawing skills – whether they are a beginner or expert.
On Saturday only, Spain arts & culture, along with Fantagraphics, is very pleased to provide Spanish language instruction and presentations with renown Spanish graphic novel creators José Domingo and David Rubín.
All workshops will held in the Brookside A&B downstairs at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, right across from the White Flint Metro stop on the Red Line.
You must have an SPX Attendee badge to participate.
For everyone else, admission is $15 Saturday, $10 Sunday and $20 both days. Admission gets you into the class, the Exhibitor Hall with nearly 700 creators selling the finest in indie comics, mini-comics, graphic novels, posters and other cool stuff. You will be emailed a confirmation the week of September 12. Teachers and students who sign up in advance by September 13 get for free to both SPX and the Cartoon Workshops.
Walk-ins will be welcome, however, space permitting. Seating to all sessions are limited to 50 people.
Confirmation emails will be sent out Wednesday, September 14.

ADMISSION: Free Passes are available to all teachers and students with confirmed workshop registration. General admission is $15 Saturday, $10 Sunday and $20 for both days, which covers both the Cartoon Workshops and the SPX festival.

SATURDAY SEPT. 17
12:00-1:00 PM – Comics with Jeffrey Brown (Register for this Session)
Bringing the “Star Wars Academy” to you! Maybe you have a burning desire to learn to draw Luke Skywalker, or need help transporting your own middle-school adventures into a galaxy far, far away? Jeffrey Brown will be on hand to share storytelling tips and drawing advice.
1:00-3:00 PM – Comics Workbook Hangout (Register for this Session)
Join the Comics Workbook team for an afternoon of comics-crafting. Learn about color and line, explore the rhythm of the grid, and take your comics-making game to a new level. Simple exercises will push you in mind-bending directions. Drop in for a minute or an hour.
3:00-5:00 PM – Spanish Fever – Spanish Language Workshop (Register for this Session)
SPX and Comics Workbook, along with the Spanish Cultural Ministry and Fantagraphics, are pleased to provide Spanish language instruction and presentations with José Domingo and David Rubín.
5:00-6:00 PM – Cameron Nicholson and Frank Santoro (Register for this Session)
Comics Workbook founder and internationally known cartoonist/teacher Frank Santoro will be joined by rising star Cameron Nicholson for a conversation about comics and music, and developing the samurai skills of a dedicated comics maker. Be prepared for mind-expansion.
SUNDAY SEPT. 18
1:00-2:00 PM – Comics with Carol Tyler (Register for this Session)
Learn the ins and outs of autobiographical comics from a maker who has been defining the form since the 1970’s. Carol Tyler will discuss her adventures in comics and share drawing tips and storytelling advice.
2:00-3:00 PM – Comics Workbook Hangout (Register for this Session)
Casual drop-in session with the Comics Workbook team. Take a break from circling the ballroom and channel some of that energy and those new ideas into your own work. Instructors and materials will be on hand for those who need additional inspiration.
3:00-4:00 PM – Comics with Charles Burns (Register for this Session)
We hear that Charles Burns is bringing slides to show us. Join us in discovering what his sometimes dark but always thrilling world involves. Draw along with him – maybe he’ll even create some of those immaculately inked black lines before your eyes.
4:00-5:00 PM – Comics Workbook Hangout (Register for this Session)
You never know who you might bump into at this final Comics Workbook hangout session. Everyone needs a place to chill out near the end of the show – we might be working on comics when Jaime Hernandez shows up to kick it, or Daniel Clowes – who can say?
