The Small Press Expo champions the originality, integrity, and diversity of small press publishing. We exist, most fundamentally, to celebrate the craft and labor of independent, authentic creative voices, a focus fully incompatible with the use of AI as a significant component in the production of artistic work.
Moreover, many generative AI models are trained on the work of creators without their consent. Such tools perpetuate unethical practices and undermine creator rights. SPX views the use of AI tools trained on stolen or scraped artwork as exploitative and fundamentally unethical.
Consistent with these core values, SPX prohibits the exhibition, promotion, or sale of AI-generated work in any form in conjunction with our festival.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Works wholly or predominantly created using generative AI tools
- Works where AI systems are used to generate imagery, text, compositions, or other creative content, even if later modified by a human
- Comics, zines, prints, or other material featuring AI-generated text or imagery
Exhibitors who are found to be selling or displaying AI-generated creative work will be required to remove the material immediately.
Noncompliance with this policy may result in immediate removal from the festival, forfeiture of exhibition fees, and disqualification from future participation.
These penalties will be applied at the sole discretion of SPX.
If you have questions about whether your work aligns with this policy, please contact us in advance via: exhibitors@smallpressexpo.com.
